Dưới cơn mưa rào, trong từng vạt nắng trưa rọi qua tán lá xanh, tiếng ve sầu râm rang, chòm pháo kim ngư lấp lánh. Hương mùa hạ bao trùm lấy tất cả, một bối cảnh thật êm đềm nơi vùng quê hẻo lánh. Câu chuyện xoay quanh cậu bé mang tên Natsume. Natsume có một bí mật mà cậu giữ kín từ lâu: cậu có khả năng thấy được những hồn ma. Trong một lần tình cờ tìm được Hữu Nhân Sổ (quyển sổ có thể sai khiến yêu quái) do bà cậu để lại, Natsume đã biết được lý do tại sao các yêu quái luôn đuổi theo mình. Cùng với Madara, một Ayakashi hùng mạnh dưới hình dạng một chú mèo mập, Natsume đã trải qua những tháng ngày đầy rắc rối những mong có thể trả lại hết tên cho các yêu quái để chúng không còn quấy rầy cậu nữa. Nhẹ nhàng và đầy ý nghĩa, từng câu chuyện vui buồn xoay quanh mối quan hệ giữa người và yêu, và như Natsume đã nói Con người hay yêu quái, trong tận thâm tâm chúng ta đều giống nhau. Rằng nỗi cô đơn luôn khiến ta sợ hãi…
